The EP

This is my first EP, released under my artist persona, NDN, and it pretty much encapsulates a year of my creative work. Looking back at it now, I still really enjoy listening to it. Every song has a lot of meaning behind it, whether that comes from where I was when I wrote it, what was going on at the time, or just the process of actually making it. I’m really proud of what it eventually turned into.

One of the highlights for me is “stay here.” I wrote the song sitting in the car in about 15 minutes, which is kind of funny considering it then took me months to actually produce.

The song came from that feeling of really wanting to hold onto a relationship and wanting someone to stay, while also knowing that completely devoting yourself to another person probably isn’t the healthiest way to go about things. I think that push and pull is what the song really ended up becoming about.

Production-wise, this one took forever. I kept coming back to it and changing things, and I also never really found a singer who could do it exactly how I heard it in my head. Still, it’s probably one of the songs on the EP that I’m most attached to.

Another highlight is “into your eyes.” That song actually came pretty late in the process. I was going back through another song I’d written and found some lyrics that I had basically forgotten about, and those eventually became this track.

It’s about not wanting to let go of a moment.

Sometimes you live through something and only realise afterwards how much you miss it. But then there are those other moments where you’re still right there, living it, and you already know you’re going to miss it. You kind of just think, Crap, I’m going to miss this.

That’s really what this song is about. Knowing a moment isn’t going to last forever, knowing you’re probably going to look back on it later, but still just being there and enjoying it while you can.

A really big part of this EP for me was also the production. I specifically didn’t want to stick to one genre, and I think you can hear that pretty clearly across the project. There’s the ambient introduction on “2:33,” the guitar-driven breakdown in “into your eyes,” and then the more lo-fi production on tracks like “forget me” and “mess.”

I jump between sounds a lot. Half the time I don’t even really notice I’m doing it until afterwards, but I think that’s become a pretty important part of the music I make. I don’t really want every song to sound like it came from exactly the same place.

So yeah, this EP is basically a snapshot of where I was creatively during that year. There are definitely things I’d do differently now, but I think that’s also part of why I still like it. I can listen back and hear where I was at the time, and I’m still genuinely proud of what I made.

I hope you guys enjoy it, and I’m really looking forward to whatever comes next.
